The French Association of Geothermal Professionals (AFPG) and the Technical Association for Energy and the Environment (ATEE) have created a working group dedicated to promoting geothermal energy use in industrial applications. The working group will be led by ATEE's Energy Efficiency group, in close coordination with AFPG, which will contribute technical expertise in geothermal energy.
Think Geo Energy reported that the working group will be officially launched on 16th April 2026.
The working group aims to promote information and experience exchange between actors involved in industrial geothermal energy, contribute to dissemination and improvement of technical references relating to geothermal energy integration in industrial processes, encourage upskilling of design offices and technical stakeholders, and identify technical and organizational levers enabling better consideration of geothermal energy in companies' energy management strategies.
Following preparatory work during the first half of 2026, the working group aims to develop a 2026 roadmap to be consolidated by summer's end. The roadmap will focus on communication actions, provision of technical and economic feedback, production of standardized Energy Savings Certificates operation sheets for industrial sectors, and support for specific operations.
Through this initiative, ATEE and AFPG intend to create a space for technical dialogue and cooperation supporting decarbonization of industrial activities through geothermal energy use.
France has decades of experience in geothermal heating, with the Île-de-France region hosting some of the world's most extensive geothermal space heating applications. In the industrial space, geothermal heat already supplies greenhouses and fish farming facilities. Recently, drilling operations started for a project supplying geothermal heat to Safran's aircraft engine manufacturing facility in Seine-et-Marne.
