Ireland hits €1 billion milestone in EU innovation funding
Ireland has officially secured more than €1 billion from Horizon Europe, the EU’s flagship research and innovation programme, marking a major step forward in the country’s R&D and competitiveness journey. The achievement positions Ireland ahead of its €1.5 billion national target under the 2021–2027 framework.
To date, Irish organisations have received €1.02 billion, representing 2.09% of the €49 billion allocated so far — well above the target share of 1.6%. Funding has supported leading research institutions, companies, and SMEs, with projects spanning bio-based artificial lungs, sustainable food systems, and marine ecosystem protection.
Enterprise Ireland, which leads the Horizon Europe National Support Network, credited the milestone to the country’s strategic investment in talent and cross-border collaboration. The programme’s reach extends beyond academia, with nearly half of participating organisations being Irish SMEs that have secured more than €267 million to scale innovations across Europe.
Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless TD, said the achievement underscores Ireland’s growing role as a strong innovator within Europe. He pointed to examples of transformative research that not only enhance national capability but also address global challenges across health, climate, and technology.
For finance and business leaders, this milestone underscores Ireland’s expanding potential in high-value R&D sectors—creating future opportunities for investment, collaboration, and sustainable growth.
