The Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) has voted to sever its relationship with the International Boxing Association, a decision approved by 81 per cent of members at its AGM in Belfast. The move follows IABA’s earlier affiliation with World Boxing, which opened the pathway for Irish athletes to compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Chairperson Niall O’Carroll described the vote as a decisive moment, securing Ireland’s position on the international boxing stage and reaffirming the association’s commitment to governance, transparency, and athlete welfare. The decision also facilitates re-affiliation with the Olympic Federation of Ireland, ensuring Irish boxers remain eligible for future Olympic events.

The IABA highlighted the collective effort of its clubs and volunteers, whose engagement and dedication were instrumental in driving the decision. The association plans to collaborate closely with both World Boxing and the Olympic Federation to ensure a smooth transition and continued success in international competitions.

This strategic realignment reflects the organisation’s focus on protecting athlete pathways while upholding operational integrity and competitive opportunity. It positions the IABA to navigate the evolving global sporting environment with greater autonomy and clarity.
