The Northern Ireland Egg Producers Association (NIEPA) has been launched within the British Free Range Egg Producers Association (BFREPA), a launch that matters to association and institute professionals as it shows a national body creating a regional chapter to give producers in a devolved nation a dedicated voice. The launch took place at the end of September.

NIEPA is a producer led group open to all egg producers across Northern Ireland, with access to BFREPA’s technical, market and policy work. Its priorities are representing producers in policy discussions, improving communications across the sector, supporting fair and transparent supply chain relationships, promoting best practice and raising awareness of locally produced eggs.

BFREPA is the trade association for free range egg producers, and NIEPA operates as part of it. Financial details are not publicly disclosed.

James Baxter, chairman of BFREPA, said, “The launch of NIEPA as part of BFREPA gives our sector a clear, united voice and a practical platform to work together on the issues that matter most to producers.”

The launch reflects the scale of an egg sector that has outgrown representation from outside the region.

Northern Ireland had close to 9 million laying hens in 2024, with 476 registered egg producers as of July that year, and over 80 per cent of layers kept in free range systems, according to the Farmers Journal. Around a quarter of eggs go to packers in Britain, the same report found. The egg sector’s output value rose 16 per cent to 264 million pounds in 2024, according to DAERA.

For the sector, a regional chapter inside a national association gives producers local focus without the cost of a separate body, because technical and policy resources are shared. For the sector’s national bodies specifically, the model offers a way to represent devolved administrations where agricultural policy and regulation differ.

The chapter also tests how much autonomy a regional group keeps once it sits inside a larger association’s governance.

Whether NIEPA attracts the producers who have so far operated without a collective voice, rather than duplicating existing channels, will indicate how far regional chapters can extend membership across the sector.
