A new coalition of architectural institutes—dubbed the Belfast Group—has been formed to harmonise fire and life safety design guidance across the UK and Ireland. The group includes RIAI, RIAS, RSAW, RSUA and RIBA, and aims to establish consistent safety standards that transcend national boundaries and regulatory differences.

This move follows the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 2 report and seeks to ensure all architects, regardless of jurisdiction, have the knowledge, access, and competencies to design buildings that prioritise life safety. The group will also collaborate with governments to improve access to technical regulations and support procurement practices that place safety at the centre of project planning.
