Ireland and Barbados have formalised a partnership to advance marine research and sustainable ocean management, launching a multiyear seabed mapping project in the Barbados Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Using the RV Celtic Explorer, Ireland’s Marine Institute will lead a bathymetric survey this summer to chart underwater terrain, assess water depth, and support Barbados in developing a Marine Spatial Plan for responsible ocean resource use.

The MoU between Ireland’s Marine Institute and Barbados’ Coastal Zone Management Unit paves the way for scientific collaboration, knowledge sharing, and technical capacity-building — aligning with the Marine Institute’s Our Shared Ocean programme, funded by Irish Aid.
